Summertime Spaces

Outdoor season is finally here and we will be wanting to soak up all the beautiful summer moments possible! For me, one of the first things to get prepared is our outdoor living spaces. Here in Alberta our season is short so we want to be able to soak up every second of it!

In the fall these outdoor spaces get closed, covered up and stored away to prepare for winter, so spring is always an unfolding and opening up to the season. I also see it as a fresh start and a new opportunity to reimagine our outdoor spaces. It all starts with a good deep clean so the area has a fresh beginning. I love to start with a theme of sorts and that begins with an inventory of the furniture pieces I want to use our would like to shift from one spot to another. It often starts with a new piece Ive found during the winter months or one that has been tucked away that I would like to bring out.. Yes you heard that correctly furniture. Outdoor spaces never in my mind are limited to patio or specific outdoor furniture. Don’t get me wrong I love patio furniture, I own a sectional and use it every year and when considering an uncovered outdoor space it is likely the only option to withstand the elements. However if you are considering pieces normally used indoors a couple of coats of fusion mineral paint, or exterior paint make it far more durable and you can consider recovering cushions and pillows with water resistant or outdoor use fabrics such as Sunbrella.

I just like to think of these spaces as bringing indoor living out doors it should be that comfortable! I believe when you think of it like that it opens up a whole other world of missed opportunities for outdoor decor possibilities! It is ideal and most important to create a space that draws you in and makes you gravitate too. A comfy cozy oasis to nap, read a book, flip through magazines have morning coffee or dinner or just hang out. So comfortable furniture is a must, pillows, soft cushions, cozy throws layers layers and more layers! A combination of sunny spots and shade, lots of flowers in pots and hangers. Mood setting elements such as Tiki torches, candles and hanging patio lights ( there are many fabulous solar choices now) change the whole vibe and are an absolute must! A painters drop cloth stretched between the trees and a projector makes for fun movie nights. And if you can sneak in a fire pit, chiminea, or gas fire table you are set to enjoy your spot with the comforts of indoor, out door. Bring out the popcorn, and blend up some margaritas and cozy in you are set for making some wonderful summer memories!
