Why Vintage
Well truly I think I have always been drawn to vintage or antique pieces for decor as far back as I can remember I was repurposing pieces with good bones for my decor. I loved digging through the random boxes of things my dad got at auction for two bits, it was one of my favourite things. I love the history and the story of vintage, the way you can reimagine vintage pieces and architecture into a new purpose or decor item and hopefully inspire others in the process.
It hurts my heart at what a disposable society we have become, nothing in mass production is made to last anymore, a perfect example is the expensive fridge I got that has all the bells and whistles and in three years has been replaced once and is yet again waiting repair, while I have the sweetest fridge in my barn that has a glorious pink interior with all its parts including a special spot to hold eggs that is about 70 years old and runs like a charm. So their is that but also history, memories, stories are trashed sometimes literally, we have company that does junk removal and it is rather horrifying the things that end up smashed and thrown in the land fill. So many people opt for something new that is poorly manufactured out of pressed board and MDF over a beautifully handcrafted item constructed out of solid wood because all they see is old, out of style, blemished or in need of repair. It’s amazing what a little love, repair, paint and sometimes new hardware can do to update one of these gems!
For me making a house a home is not created with mass produced pieces that don’t tug at my heart strings, this is not to be confused with finding a new quality made piece that you love the look of, sure you are pleased with your purchase and you enjoy it. I’m talking about the pieces you add to those new pieces that were passed down from family or the one’s you find that make you think of your grandmother or that special aunt Sue or that summer you spent in the country. I’m talking about that tugging of the heart, the one that invokes a feeling, a warm memory, a story of your life, and gives soulfulness to your home!
New mass produced things can beautifully fill a room and its nice to look at, but what does it make you feel, what connection do you have when you walk in the room? That’s what I’m talking about, that’s what is different about a house verses a home. It’s the essence and the story, the memories, history, and the cozy soulful feel in a home.
This for me is why vintage, I call it soulful home decor, I carry my story, my people, my memories with me and I pass them on to the next generation.
